How To Build Strong Immunity During Seasonal Changes

Seasons will come and go, and in the same way viruses and bacteria will also come and go with the changing time. But we need to keep ourselves prepared to fight them. We can only protect ourselves from these viruses and diseases by keeping our immunity strong. It is becoming extremely important to take care of ourselves, especially our immunity levels. Immunity, as we all know, is the ability to resist a specific infectious disease. So, strong immunity plays a crucial role in protecting us. Today, let’s discuss a few tips that will help build immunity to keep ourselves strong during seasonal changes.

Firstly let’s understand what we should eat to build our immunity. The first thing in the morning is the spoonful of ghee as it helps gut health and removes acidity. During times of illness, the digestive system can become poor, leading to nausea and vomiting. Ghee helps improve and strengthen your digestive system. Have simple and easily digestible food throughout the day and ensure that you use green vegetables like spinach and fenugreek leaves in your diet. Spinach is rich in nitrates that produce nitric oxide and has anti-inflammatory properties. This prevents a virus from spreading in the body. Pomegranate juice, beetroot juice, and pineapple juice are also rich in nitrates and help in preventing the spread of viruses in the body. In between meals, one could have a tablespoon of honey with ginger to soothe the throat, as both ginger and honey are antiviral and anti-inflammatory. Herbal tea made up of Tulsi leaves, mint leaves, lemongrass, ginger, etc., should be consumed in the morning as well as in the evening. This also builds your immunity. End your day with a warm cup of milk and turmeric. This helps induce sound sleep, and as we all know, good sleep is a must to release proper hormones and to boost immunity.

Another superfood called soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is present in all fruits and vegetables, sprouts, legumes, sweet potatoes, carrots, flaxseed, sunflower seeds, and millet. This soluble fiber converts our immune system from a pro-inflammatory state to an anti-inflammatory state, meaning it reduces swelling. This happens because after consuming soluble fiber, an anti-inflammatory protein is produced in our body, which helps us recover quickly from any disease.

Garlic and ginger both have antiviral, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties that greatly help us fight any infection. If you mix grated or chopped ginger and garlic with lemon and honey and consume it like medicine with some lukewarm water, it also makes a very good tea.

Now, along with the right food, we need to combine the right habits. These five simple and practical habits will greatly help improve your immune function.

First, practice Pranayama. Remember to breathe correctly as it is essential to ensure that your respiratory system is functioning well. One particular Pranayama which helps increase nitric oxide in our body is also known as a tranquilizing Pranayama. Sit with your eyes closed in a meditative pose. Place your index fingers softly on your earlobes. Now, inhale through your nose and hold your breath after inhaling for two to three seconds. Then, exhale in a long and controlled manner to produce a deep, steady, and continuous humming sound. Keep your earlobes closed while exhaling. Practice this for three rounds throughout the day. Along with this, Pranayama like Anulom Vilom (alternate nostril breathing), equal breathing, and diaphragmatic breathing are also extremely beneficial.

Second, keep your mind calm. We sometimes panic because of social media and news that keep sharing details about diseases. Remember, a stress-free mind plays a very important role in boosting your immunity. Understand that these times are tough; however, we need to keep ourselves composed. Since we all cannot step out of the house and are away from near and dear ones, we tend to become stressed. Think positive, as you attract only what you think. Positive thoughts attract positive situations.

The third important factor which will keep us safe from seasonal infections and helps in building strong immunity during seasonal changes is a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Consuming a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins provides the body with essential nutrients needed to support immune function. For instance, Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits and bell peppers, is crucial for white blood cell production, while Vitamin D, obtained from sunlight and fortified foods, plays a vital role in immune regulation. Zinc, present in nuts and legumes, also contributes significantly to immune cell development and function.

Fourth, beyond nutrition, adequate sleep is equally critical. During sleep, our bodies produce cytokines, proteins that target infection and inflammation, effectively strengthening our immune response. Chronic sleep deprivation can suppress the immune system, making us more susceptible to illnesses. Aiming for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night is highly recommended.

Fifth, regular physical activity helps to boost immunity by increasing circulation and promoting the release of endorphins, which can reduce stress. Moderate exercise, such as brisk walking or cycling, can enhance the activity of immune cells. However, it’s important to avoid over-exercising, as extreme physical stress can temporarily weaken the immune system.

Finally, stress management is paramount. Chronic stress releases hormones like cortisol, which can suppress the immune system over time. Practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing can help mitigate the negative effects of stress on our health, thereby supporting a robust immune system throughout the year.

Read good books, talk to your friends and family, and indulge in hobbies which you never had time for. Pray to keep yourself positive. Support your body and build your immunity and mental strength. Stay healthy, stay fit, and be happy.
